Summer is finally here. Yayy. 🙂
In our part of the world, summer is pretty short lived so you have to make the most of it. I already have my list of beaches, picnics, vacations etc. lined up. This summer is extra special for me as my parents are visiting us and I am so looking forward to it. This also means I might not be able to “Serve you as much Love” in the next month. Thanks for sticking by with me. 😀
For today’s post I have a very unique drink to share with you. Summer is all about drinks, ice-creams and other cooler treats. Today we are making a non-alcoholic layered (or stacked) drink. An alcoholic version of the same is called a pousse-café. This drink scores really high on the presentation factor. It looks beautiful and is pretty easy to make. The different drinks are layered based on their sugar contents, with the simple logic that the higher the sugar content, the denser the drink, and it thus sits at the bottom of the glass. Make your way up to the top with drinks that are lightly sugared as compared to the previous layer, with the last layer preferably being sugar free. The more the difference between their sugar levels, the better the layering.
Lets make this beautiful drink 😛
A video of me making this drink is uploaded on my you tube channel here
Ingredients:
Here are the three Juices I have used.
- Apple juice with 28 grams of sugar for a 240 ml serving.
- Raspberry lemonade 25 grams of sugar for a 240 ml serving
- Hawaiian Punch 15 grams of sugar for a 240 ml of serving.
Method:
- Add some ice to your glass and start with the drink with the highest sugar content. In our case the Apple juice. I have used about 1/2 cup of the same.
- Next take 1/4 cup of raspberry lemonade and pour it very slowly from the back of a spoon. See video here.
- Finally top it with Hawaiian Punch, again about 1/4 cup, the drink with the lowest sugar content. Again very slowly using the back of a spoon.
- Garnish with some mint leaves and enjoy this beautiful drink.
And here is another version I had tried :
- Orange Juice – sugar content 22 g, for a 240 ml serving
- Pomegranate Vitamin Water – sugar content 13 g, for a 240 ml serving
- Plain chilled water – sugar content 0 g
- Mint leaves for garnish
See notes for more layering ideas*
Method:
- Fill your glass with some ice cubes.
- Pour the Orange juice or your drink with the highest sugar content in your glass, up to 1/3 of the way. Let it settle down.
- Pour the Vitamin Water or your second drink very slowly keeping a steady hand till the glass is about 2/3 filled. I have noticed that pouring the drink very slowly over the back of a spoon really helps. Allow it to settle.
- For the last layer, I added just a little bit of water, but feel free to make as many layers as you like, making sure their sugar contents are not close enough, or else the drink will just blend in.
- Finally garnish with some mint leaves and enjoy this beautiful treat.
Notes:
Here are some layering options that I found online (Thank you Pinterest) that works great.
- Strawberry Juice, lemonade, Iced Tea
- Cherry Juice, Pineapple Juice, Orange Juice
- Kiwi Syrup, Lemonade, watermelon juice
So that is how I made my layered drink. Do give this a try and let me know what all interesting combinations worked for you.
Thanks so much for stopping by.
See you again soon.
